Adopt-a-Library

HomeBridge Joins the Adopt-a-Library Literacy Program to Put Books in the Hands of Youth
Thanks to the Adopt-a-Library Literacy Program (AAL) in Nova Scotia HomeBridge is now well on its way to creating a well stocked reading area in all six youth caring facilities and our school, Bridges for Learning.
The recent introduction to AAL (www.fightingcrime.ca) has been an amazing gift to HomeBridge as it has already resulted in hundreds of new, quality books being donated to the organization, which include very current and popular titles like Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Miley Cyrus this is her life and Eat Pray Love.
The Adopt-a-LibraryProgram was designed to give children and youth tools and the skills so they have the power to decide not to engage in criminal behaviour. The tools and skills come through literacy. The Program works by partnering libraries with police, who bring together other community partners such as businesses, service clubs and agencies.
The results are:
-
Book collections that intrigue, inspire, educate and inform.
-
Programming that builds respect, sense of community, self-esteem and pride.
-
Safe community places for individuals and families, away from violence, drugs and gangs.
For HomeBridge being part of the program means that our school, Bridges for Learning which is funded through the Departments of Education and Community Services and community support, now has shelves full of books for the students to access and each of our facilities are also equipped with a reading nook that is filled with age-appropriate books to engage and inspire the young people who reside there. The Bridges for Learning students have also enrolled in the WOW Reading Challenge and are very enthusiastically counting every page they read to see how far they can go.
HomeBridge is both grateful and proud to be part of a program that strives to build a sense of community through literacy.
