A New Year in the Expressions Program of the Arts

This year’s theme for the Expressions Program of the Arts is our effort to empower youth to explore their identities, process emotions, strengthen resilience, and enhance healthy coping strategies through music therapy, visual arts, and photography.

Many young people who have experienced adversity, complex-trauma, neglect, loss, or instability, struggle to express their thoughts and feelings. Trauma can affect a young person's ability to trust others, self-regulate emotions, develop a positive sense of self, and communicate their needs. Creative expression, like offered through this program, presents a pathway to healing and development by providing opportunities for youth to tell their stories in ways that feel safe, meaningful, and authentic.

We recognize that every young person has a voice worth hearing. Through artistic exploration rather than performance or perfection, participants are encouraged to discover their strengths, celebrate their individuality, and build confidence in who they are and who they aspire to become. “Sharing Your Voice” is grounded in strengths-based, trauma-informed, and youth-centred practice.  Our facilitators create emotionally and physically safe environments where young people have choice, control, and opportunities to experience success. In this program, success is measured not by artistic ability but by each young person's willingness to engage, express themselves, build relationships, and recognize their own strengths and potential. Rather than focusing on the challenges that have shaped their lives to date, Expressions emphasizes each young person’s creativity, resilience, and capacity for growth.

Creative-arts engage areas of the brain involved in emotion, memory, sensory processing, and problem-solving. Music, art, and photography provide non-verbal avenues for expression that can reduce anxiety, support emotional regulation, and help youth explore difficult experiences without requiring them to recount traumatic events directly. By combining multiple creative modalities, participants are able to discover which forms of expression feel most natural to them while developing life-skills they can continue using throughout their lives to manage stress, build self-awareness, and foster overall well-being.

This therapeutic and life-skill building program continues to offer Art Classes, Music Therapy, and Photography.  Sessions run from September through June throughout the entire HomeBridge Community, including our on-site school program, Bridges for Learning.  Art and Music sessions take place twice weekly, rotating through all programs and photography sessions will take place with youth who are interested on a one-on-one basis.  Youth who show a particular interest in honing their skills can also move on to Master Classes, which are one-on-one, focused sessions with their chosen facilitator.

Implementing these types of programs and activities in a coordinated and supportive environment can effectively build protective factors for vulnerable youth, strengthen their resilience, and empower them to overcome adversity, heal and thrive.  They just have to be encouraged to share their voice.

Every young person has a story worth telling.

This year’s theme for Expressions will help participants discover that healing does not always begin with words. Sharing your voice sometimes begins with a beat, a brushstroke, or the click of a camera. Through creativity, connection, and compassionate support, vulnerable youth are given opportunities to explore who they are, celebrate their strengths, and build confidence in the voices that will guide them into adulthood.  It is only with the support of our incredible donors that we can offer this meaningful program.  It is entirely funded through your support.  Thank you for believing in the healing powers of creative expressions.
