Recreation Programmer

We are looking for an ambitious Recreation Programmer to join our team for the summer! As the Recreation Programmer, you will be responsible for organizing, planning and documenting recreation and leisure experiences for youth between the ages of 12-18 living in a group care setting. You will be under the direction of a Recreation Therapist and receiving guidance from a team of Supervisors to ensure that the highest quality support and care is provided. This position is partially funded by a federal summer grant so the incumbent must be returning to school in the fall of 2023 and under the age of 30.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The Recreation Programmer will be supervised by the Director of Operations and will receive guidance from the Recreation Therapist to facilitate healthy, meaningful recreation outings to youth served by the HomeBridge Youth Society as part of the Summer Recreation Program.

 

Summer Recreation at HomeBridge Youth Society consists of daily leisure outings based on the interests of the youth in the program. This typically includes outdoor adventure, community events, arts & crafts programs, sports, entrepreneurship, and social programs.

 

The Recreation Programmer will liaise with the Recreation Therapist and the Youth Care teams to ensure that youth are supported to engage in activities, and that appropriate efforts are made to reduce risks and to support the youth to have successful, meaningful experiences.

 

The Recreation Therapist will provide education to the Recreation Programmer about relational Child and Youth Care as it relates to recreation, and will collaborate closely with the Recreation Programmer throughout outings to ensure the youth experience physical and emotional safety.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Recreation Programmer takes pride in providing safe, high quality care to youth experiencing emotional, behavioural and mental health and addiction issues through providing direct recreation and leisure opportunities to youth receiving services from HomeBridge Youth Society. The Recreation Programmer demonstrates openness and honesty and builds successful relationships with the youth and other care providers as partners in decision making and care. The Recreation Programmer supports the youth to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle and makes a positive difference in the lives of others.
                   

• Plan and implement a variety of recreation programs in conjunction with the Recreation Therapist  

• Ensure information about healthy recreation and lifestyle is available to youth and employees                    

• Evaluate the effectiveness of programs and identify areas where new programs are needed

• Schedule activities, transportation and additional staffing as required

• Book facility rentals and community events; manage associated contracts

• Collaborate with the Recreation Therapist to develop monthly recreation reports 

• Demonstrate commitment to each youth and their needs, abilities, program, and plan of care

• Participate in individual care planning when necessary, always considering the unique needs and interests of each youth

• Promote recreational, leisure and cultural programs to all HomeBridge youth and employees

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

• Must be a college or university student enrolled in a Therapeutic Recreation or a related field program and returning to school in the fall of 2023

• Preference will be given to applicants who have experience working with youths who are experiencing behavioural and or emotional difficulties

• Training in First Aid, Non Violent Crisis Interventions, Mental Health First Aid and ASIST are considered assets

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

 

The work environment demands a strong concentration and the ability to focus while maintaining sensitivity and appreciation of the delicate balance required in working with the clientele. Work hours are based on client needs. Incumbent will be required to travel to other HomeBridge facilities, and other locations as directed. Must be able to work independently or in a team environment, and under stressful conditions. Working environment often requires sensitivity to cultural, societal differences, and appropriate protocols. Working conditions include physical, emotional and mental demands. 

 

LENGTH OF CONTRACT, HOURS OF WORK AND SALARY:

 

The expected start date will be June 26, 2023 and will run until August 25, 2023. The salary is $22.00 per hour based on a 35 hour work week

The general hours of work will be Monday to Friday 8:30am-4:30pm however there may be the occasional evening or weekend required

 

The successful applicant will be subject to background screening which includes a clear Child Abuse Register, and a Police Check including a vulnerable sector search
